Colleges and Universities Celebrate Our Nation’s 250th Birthday

America250 Is Leading the Commemoration
All across America, colleges and universities are recognizing the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
From Pennsylvania to Idaho and many points in between, institutions are marking the semiquincentennial by holding exhibitions, conferences, and other events and offering courses and other opportunities for learning.
For its part, ACE is proud to be a supporting partner of America250, the national, nonpartisan organization charged by Congress to lead the commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Here are a few examples of how colleges and universities are marking this anniversary:
- University of Pennsylvania: Penn Libraries is bringing together the campus community to recognize the semiquincentennial through exhibitions, art commissions, performances, innovative courses, conferences, and more, with a full event calendar available for the university community.
- University of Idaho: As Idaho’s land-grant research university, U of I has brought people together from across campus and community to explore what the 250th milestone means—both nationally and locally—through creative programming, public dialogue, and open events.
- Indiana University Bloomington: IUB will host programming, exhibits, and events honoring the country’s past and the declaration’s principles. The centerpiece is a Lilly Library exhibit featuring one of only 26 known surviving Dunlap Broadsides—a first printing of the Declaration of Independence from the night of July 4, 1776.
- University of South Carolina: Throughout 2026, faculty and staff from throughout the university are hosting events—hosted by the Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse—exploring the ideas that inspired the founders, the history of revolution-era America, and the ways the nation has wrestled with its founding ideals.
- Georgetown University: One of Georgetown University’s signature contributions to the semiquincentennial was a lecture series supported by Georgetown’s Office of the Vice President for Global Engagement and coordinated between the GU Global Irish Studies Initiative and the GU Institute for Global History. The series explored the American Revolution and its international legacies across an “age of revolutions.”
- Ursinus College: Ursinus launched a dedicated America250 initiative that offers eligible Montgomery County, PA students a $10,000 tuition cap, starting fall 2026. The initiative honors the county’s central role in the nation’s founding, alongside research and learning opportunities through its Civic Spark Hub.
Meanwhile, the Jack Miller Center, a Philadelphia-based educational nonprofit, has announced 33 partnerships with university and college campuses in celebration of the anniversary. These campus programs will help reintroduce key themes of the Declaration of Independence into public discourse on campuses across the country, the center says.
Celebrating the United States Semiquincentennial in innovative, instructive, and inspirational ways is another example of how Higher Education Builds America.
